A Zebra printing blank labels is almost always the media, the ribbon, darkness, or a job that never put black on the page. Work through this list before you buy a new head.

Direct thermal vs thermal transfer
- Direct thermal is heat-sensitive stock. No ribbon. Common for 4×6 shipping.
- Thermal transfer needs a ribbon. Labels come out blank if the ribbon is missing, flipped, or empty.
Match the media to the printer setting. Industrial units like the ZT411 often use ribbons. Many shipping desktops are direct thermal only.
Darkness and speed
Too light plus too fast looks like a ghost, or like nothing at all. Raise darkness, slow the speed, then print a test. You can change this on the printer menu. Then send a solid black box from the free label maker so you know the job actually has ink.
Roll loaded upside down, or the sensor is lost
- The coated print side must face the head. Check the path diagram inside the door.
- Calibrate the gap sensor after you change stock. Calibrate guide.
- Wrong sensor type (gap vs black mark) can skip and look like empty labels.

More troubleshooting
Old direct-thermal stock that sat in heat can lose sensitivity and print pale or blank. Try a fresh roll from a sealed pack.
