Print on a Zebra without a design suite

Zebra label software, in this case, is the browser. You open a size the roll can accept, you import a spreadsheet when you have more than one label, and you print. ZPL is there when the printer wants ZPL. Read it first in the ZPL viewer if you are not sure the file matches the roll. Browser Print is the usual path from Chrome. A Zebra that feeds blank labels is a sensor or media setting, and the fix-it posts linked from the blog are the place for that, not a second copy of this design.

How to make a Zebra label

Open the size printed on the roll.

  1. Open the 4 x 6 Zebra shipping label. No signup. If your roll is a different card above, use that card instead. The editor opens at the size on the card.
  2. Change the ship-to, the SKU, or the bin. When every label is different, print labels from Excel or a CSV. One row is one label. Put the barcode value in its own column and keep it as text so a leading zero stays.
  3. Add a CODE128 barcode or a QR code only if someone will scan it. Leave a quiet zone around the bars. A barcode shoved into the edge of a 2 x 1 will not scan even when the art looks fine on screen.
  4. Download ZPL when the printer is waiting for ZPL, or print from this computer. If you are not sure the file matches the roll, open it in the ZPL viewer before you send the stack.
  5. Print one label. Check that the type is on the face, not in the gap. Then print the rest. A blank feed or a short label is a media setting, which is the next section, not a reason to redesign the artwork.

Printer setup

Match the printer in front of you. Zebra lists the ZD220 as a 4 inch desktop at 203 dpi, in direct thermal or thermal transfer. The ZD230 is the other model on the ZD220/ZD230 support page. The ZD421 is the 4 inch ZD400: 203 dpi standard, 300 dpi optional, direct thermal or thermal transfer, about 4.09 inches wide at 203 dpi. The ZD411 is the narrow one. Zebra caps that model around 2.25 inches, so it will not print a 4 x 6. The ZD621 is in the same 4 inch desktop group.

A GK420d or a GX420d is the older 4 inch direct thermal printer. Zebra's comparison sheet lists both at 203 dpi, speaking ZPL and EPL.

Direct thermal needs no ribbon. The label coating darkens. Thermal transfer needs a ribbon. Scratch the face: direct thermal marks, transfer stock does not. Load a ribbon only on a transfer model.

After a new roll, run media calibration so the sensor learns the gap or the black mark. A blank label is usually that sensor, or a driver still set to Letter. A 4 x 6 at 203 dpi is 812 by 1218 dots. 300 dpi is for tiny bars, not a normal shipping barcode. This page is a ZebraDesigner alternative for the layout. You still print with the Zebra driver or Browser Print. This site does not install that driver.

ZPL and Zebra labels

ZPL is the language a ZD, GK, or GX already understands. Export it from the label you just designed, then read it in the ZPL viewer if you want to see the picture before it hits the roll. ZPL fundamentals is the short tour of what those commands are doing.

A 300 dpi file of the same 4 x 6 uses more dots, and a 203 dpi head will not redraw it. Match the file to the head, or print from this computer and let the driver rasterize.

Which Zebra prints a 4 x 6?

A 4 inch desktop: the ZD220, ZD230, ZD421, or ZD621, or a legacy GK420d or GX420d. The ZD411 is a narrow printer, about 2.25 inches, so it is the wrong machine for a 4 x 6 shipping label.

Do I need ZebraDesigner?

No. Lay the label out here. ZebraDesigner is Zebra's own design app. You still need the printer driver or Browser Print on the computer attached to the printer. This page does not install either one.

What is the difference between 203 and 300 dpi?

203 dpi is the standard head on a ZD220 and on most shipping printers. The ZD411 and ZD421 are also offered with a 300 dpi head. Use 300 dpi when the bars or the type are very small. A normal 4 x 6 barcode prints at 203 dpi.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?

Direct thermal has no ribbon. The label itself darkens. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon and holds up better in heat and sunlight. The ZD220 is sold both ways. Load a ribbon only if the printer is the transfer model and the stock is not direct thermal.

Why does the Zebra print a blank label?

The usual cause is media calibration, or the sensor looking for a gap the roll does not have. Calibrate after you load the roll, and set the driver length to the label, not to Letter. If the file is ZPL, check it in the ZPL viewer before you send it again.
