Brother label templates without P-touch Editor

A QL printer wants the DK roll that is actually loaded: die-cut DK-1201 for addresses, DK-1202 for a larger ship-to, DK-2205 for 62 mm continuous tape, DK-2210 for 29 mm tape. P-touch Editor is not required to design those. Open the card, including the ones that jump straight into the editor because we retired the near-duplicate pages. If the tape is continuous, do not hunt for a gap. If the roll is die-cut, the gap is how the printer knows the next label.

How to make a Brother label

A QL printer wants the DK roll that is actually in it. A P-touch wants TZe tape. Those are different supplies, and the cards on this page keep them apart.

  1. Open the Brother DK-1201 address label. No signup. DK-1201 is the standard address die, about 29 mm by 90 mm. If you loaded a different DK roll, open that card instead.
  2. Edit the lines, or print labels from Excel or a CSV. One row is one label. On continuous tape, set the length to the words, not to a die you do not have.
  3. Die-cut rolls have a gap. Continuous rolls (DK-2205, DK-2210, DK-2223) do not. Do not hunt for a gap sensor mark on a continuous roll, and do not tell the driver a continuous roll is a 4 x 6 die.
  4. Print from this computer. Pick the QL or the P-touch in the dialog and leave scaling off. You do not install P-touch Editor to design the label.
  5. Print one. If the QL feeds a long blank, the driver still thinks the roll is a longer die. Match the driver to the DK number on the cartridge, then print the list.

Printer setup

Brother's DK-1201 address die is 29 mm by 90.3 mm, about 1.1 by 3.5 inches. DK-1202 is the larger ship-to, 62 mm by 100 mm, about 2.4 by 3.9 inches. DK-2205 is 62 mm continuous paper. DK-2210 is 29 mm continuous (Brother lists it as 1.1 inch by 100 feet). DK-2223 is 50 mm continuous, 2 inches wide, and Brother's product page lists it for the QL-700, QL-800, QL-810W, QL-820NWB, QL-1100, and QL-1110NWB.

The QL-1100 prints labels up to 4 inches wide. Brother's QL-1110NWB support page is that same wide printer with the network options. DK-1241 is the large die, about 4 by 6 inches (about 101 by 152 mm). DK-1240 is the wide multipurpose die, about 4 by 2 inches. Those 4 inch rolls belong in a QL-1100 or QL-1110NWB. They do not belong in a QL-800.

The QL-700, QL-800, QL-810W, and QL-820NWB are the 62 mm class. They take DK-1201, DK-1202, DK-2205 at 62 mm, DK-2210 at 29 mm, and DK-2223 at 50 mm. Brother lists those continuous tapes for that QL-800 family. A 4 inch DK-1241 will not fit that mechanism.

TZe tape is the P-touch cartridge, not a QL roll. The TZe cards here run from 3.5 mm to 36 mm. Read the width on your P-touch before you open the 36 mm card.

No. Design the label here and print from this computer. P-touch Editor is Brother's own app. This page does not install it, and it does not install the Brother driver either. The driver is what the print dialog uses.

Which QL prints a 4 x 6 DK-1241?

A wide QL. Brother's QL-1100 prints up to 4 inches, and the QL-1110NWB is the wide model with the extra connections. The QL-800, QL-810W, and QL-820NWB stop around 62 mm, so they take DK-1201, DK-1202, and the continuous tapes, not DK-1241.

What is the difference between DK-2205, DK-2210, and DK-2223?

All three are continuous paper, so you choose the length. DK-2205 is 62 mm wide. DK-2210 is 29 mm wide. DK-2223 is 50 mm wide. Brother lists DK-2223 and DK-2210 for the QL-700, QL-800, QL-810W, and QL-820NWB.

Can I use TZe tape in a QL printer?

No. TZe is the P-touch cassette. A QL takes DK die-cut labels or DK continuous tape. Open a TZe card only when the printer in front of you is a P-touch, and only at a width that model lists.

How do I print Brother labels from Excel?

Put one label per row, import the sheet or a CSV, and print from this computer. On a die-cut roll, the length is fixed by the DK number. On continuous tape, set the length so the words fit and the cutter has somewhere to land.
