How to load labels in a Zebra printer (step-by-step)
Most "printer not working" tickets start with media. If you need to load labels in a Zebra printer, use this checklist, calibrate once, then print one test from the free app.
Before you start
- Correct stock for the job (usually direct thermal 4×6 for shipping)
- Core size and width that fit your model (ZD220/420/421, GK420d, etc.)
- Power on, open the printhead lever / lid fully
Load steps (desktop Zebra)
- Open the media cover and lift the printhead lever.
- Place the roll on the holders so labels feed from the bottom or per your model diagram (print side facing the head).
- Slide media guides snug, not crushing the roll.
- Pull a few labels past the print line; close the head firmly until it latches.
- Close the cover. Run a media calibration (button combo or driver utility) so the gap sensor learns label length.
If the head is open or media is empty, the printer shows paused / media out and will not print. Fix hardware first: paused / head open, offline / media out.
After loading, print free
- Open https://app.mylabelmaker.com and set the exact label size and DPI.
- Add a solid text or barcode test.
- Print via Browser Print.
