How to design Zebra labels (beginner guide)
Good Zebra labels are readable at arm’s length, scan on the first try, and fit the stock you load. You do not need ZebraDesigner to learn the craft — use a free browser canvas and the same rules professional packing stations use.
1. Pick the physical size first
Design for the roll in the printer, not a letter PDF. Common US sizes:
- 4×6 — shipping (USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon cartons)
- 2×1 / 2.25×1.25 — product SKU / FNSKU
- 3×2 — bins, medium product info
- 1×1 / 2×2 — small QR or unit tags

2. Match DPI before you place a barcode
203 DPI is most common on ZD420/GK420d; many ZD421/ZD621 units are 300. Wrong DPI = soft bars that fail scanners. Details: fix fuzzy prints.
3. Build a simple hierarchy
- Primary ID — tracking, SKU, or FNSKU as the largest scannable element.
- Human-readable text under the barcode (same value).
- Secondary lines — name, address, description, qty.
- Quiet zones — leave clear margins around barcodes; don’t hug the edge.
4. Use native barcodes, not screenshot images
In mylabelmaker, insert CODE128, UPC-A, EAN, or QR objects. Avoid pasting phone photos of barcodes. For retail UPC: UPC guide.
5. Design once, print many with variables
Replace changing fields with tokens: {{name}}, {{sku}}, {{barcode}}. Import CSV and batch. Guide: batch print.
6. Print a real test on stock
- Calibrate media if gaps skip — calibrate.
- Print one label; scan the barcode.
- Adjust darkness if bars are light; check orientation if blank.
