How to calibrate a Zebra printer when labels skip
If your Zebra feeds two labels for one print, stops mid-label, or prints halfway onto the next sticker, the printer has lost track of the gap (or black mark) between labels. Calibration tells the sensor where each label starts.
Gap vs black-mark media
- Gap (web) — most US direct-thermal shipping and product rolls. Sensor looks for the gap between die-cuts.
- Black mark — some fanfold or specialty stock with a black bar on the liner. Set the sensor type to black-mark or prints will never align.
- Continuous — receipt-style media with no gaps; you set length in software instead.
Quick calibration (most desktops)
- Load media so it sits under the guides and path diagram; close the door firmly.
- Power on. Press Feed once — a single full label should advance.
- If feed is wrong, hold Feed (often 2 seconds) until the printer runs auto-calibration, or use the LCD Sensors → Calibrate menu on ZD series.
- Optionally print a config/sensor profile from Zebra Setup Utilities to confirm gap detection.
- Print a single test label from mylabelmaker.
Side guides and skew
Loose guides let the web wander so the gap sensor samples the wrong area. Snug the guides against the liner without crushing it. Clean dust from the sensor window with a dry lint-free cloth.
Browser Print after calibration
Calibration is printer-side — you do not reinstall Browser Print. If the printer still mis-feeds only from software, check that the label height in the app matches the physical stock (e.g. 6.00" for 4×6). Setup: Browser Print.
Model notes
- ZD420 / ZD421 / ZD621 — use Feed or LCD calibrate.
- ZD411 — 2" desktop; same gap logic on smaller media.
- GK420d / ZP450 — classic desktops; Feed calibration is common.
