Why do my ZebraDesigner fonts look different on another PC?

ZebraDesigner fonts and images look wrong on thermal labels

What users report: fonts substitute to something ugly, logos print fuzzy, text is light grey, or a beautiful on-screen design becomes unreadable on 4×6 direct thermal. Designers built for office documents fight thermal physics.

Thermal heads print binary heat patterns. Tiny serif fonts, semi-transparent PNGs, and 72 DPI web logos fail. Free browser design still requires the same discipline — but makes size/DPI obvious so you stop guessing.

Design for thermal: in mylabelmaker use solid dark text, native barcodes, and modest logos at printer DPI. Print a test every time you change a logo.

Font problems

Missing fonts on other PCs — template uses a font not installed on the packing station → substitution.
Hairline type — looks fine on LCD; vanishes or breaks on 203 DPI.
Grey fills — thermal dithering looks dirty; use solid black/dark ink.

Fixes: stick to a small font set available everywhere; prefer bold sans for small sizes; avoid light grey. Browser design on each PC uses web fonts consistently for the session — still print-test.

Image / logo problems

Huge marketing PNG scaled down → heavy files and odd resampling
Logo with soft anti-aliased edges → muddy on thermal
Color logo expected to look “brand perfect” on monochrome direct thermal

Fixes: export a high-contrast mono or simple logo near target print size; keep file small; place with margin from the edge — cut-off guide.

DPI is non-negotiable

203 vs 300 changes how both text and barcodes rasterize. Match the printer. Soft barcodes: 300 DPI fix · not scanning.

Light or grainy output is not always “the font”

Dirty head, low darkness, or bad media mimic bad design. Check print too light and printhead cleaning before redrawing the whole template.

Free redesign checklist

Set exact size and DPI in mylabelmaker.
Replace decorative fonts with bold, readable type.
Insert native barcodes; never screenshot bars from the old designer.
Add a compressed high-contrast logo.
Print; adjust darkness; freeze the template for the team — share templates.

Direct thermal is monochrome heat. It will not reproduce full-color brand guidelines. Design shipping and warehouse labels for scanability and legibility first.

Recommended type sizes for 203 DPI

Body address text: avoid going tiny; test scan distance for barcodes separately
Fine print legal lines: may need 300 DPI printers or larger labels
Human-readable under barcodes: large enough to read without a scanner when systems fail

Building a “thermal brand kit”

Store approved assets: logo-mono.png, logo-small.png, font list, minimum barcode height, quiet-zone rule. Designers (human) must use the kit whether they open ZebraDesigner or mylabelmaker. Consistency beats perfect brand RGB on a monochrome ship label.

Exporting from Canva / PowerPoint into thermal (don’t)

People paste entire slides into label software. Results: huge white space, tiny content, unscannable codes. Always rebuild with native barcode objects on a true thermal size artboard.
