Zebra ZD420 setup guide — label sizes, DPI & browser printing

The Zebra ZD420 is one of the most common desktop thermal printers in US shipping rooms, Amazon FBA prep, and small warehouses. This guide walks you from unboxing to printing free labels from a browser with mylabelmaker — no ZebraDesigner required.

What you need

Zebra ZD420 (direct thermal or thermal transfer model)
USB cable or Ethernet (network)
Label stock — typically 4×6 shipping or 2×1 / 3×2 product/inventory
Computer on Windows or Mac
Zebra Browser Print (free) + browser

Step 1 — Load media and power on

Open the ZD420 media door.
Insert the label roll with the printable side facing the correct direction for your model (follow the path diagram inside the door).
Feed labels under the guides so the media sits flat against the platen.
Close the door firmly; connect power and USB (or Ethernet).
Press the Feed button once or twice to advance and help the printer sense gap marks.

If labels feed continuously or stop mid-label, run media calibration (often Feed button hold, or via printer tools). Gap/black-mark setting must match your stock.

Step 2 — Know your DPI

Most ZD420 units are 203 DPI. Confirm on the model sticker or config report. In mylabelmaker, set the printer DPI to match — mismatched DPI is the #1 cause of fuzzy barcodes. Details: fix fuzzy 300 DPI prints.

Step 3 — Install Zebra Browser Print

Download Browser Print for Windows or Mac (links on the mylabelmaker setup section).
Install, then fully restart your browser.
Confirm the Browser Print service is running (tray icon on Windows; menu bar on Mac).

Step 4 — Print from mylabelmaker (free software)

Open app.mylabelmaker.com.
Select your ZD420 in the printer picker.
Set label size (4×6 for USPS/UPS/FedEx shipping; 2×1 for product barcodes).
Set DPI to 203 (or your actual resolution).
Design or load a template → Print.

Common ZD420 label sizes in the US

4×6 — shipping (USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon)
2×1 — product / SKU stickers
3×2 — warehouse bin / shelf
4×3 — larger product or pallet half-labels

Troubleshooting

Printer not listed — Browser Print not running; wrong USB port; restart browser; try Chrome.
Blank labels — media loaded upside down or wrong darkness; increase darkness in printer settings.
Skew / partial print — guides too loose; recalibrate gap sensor.
Mac cannot see printer — complete Browser Print cert trust; see Mac guide.

Use genuine or high-quality 4×6 direct-thermal stock rated for your print volume. Cheap rolls can leave adhesive on the platen and cause misfeeds.
