- Direct thermal: heat from the printhead darkens special paper. No ribbon. Most 4×6 shipping labels.
- Thermal transfer: heat melts ribbon ink onto the label. Needs ribbon and compatible stock. Longer outdoor and chemical life.
Use direct thermal when
- USPS/UPS/FedEx shipping labels that ship out in days/weeks
- High volume packing stations, lower cost per label, no ribbon swaps
- Indoor warehouse bins and short-life SKUs

Media type is a printer setting (and physical ribbon). Software still needs correct size and DPI, blank or light prints are often media mismatch, not “bad design.” See blank labels fix.
