How to make labels for a thermal printer
Thermal printers do not use ink. You make labels by designing for heat-sensitive stock at the printer’s width and DPI, then sending a native job. Wrong approach: design a letter PDF and “fit to page.”
1. Use thermal-compatible stock
- Direct thermal — shipping and most product stickers (no ribbon)
- Thermal transfer — longer outdoor life (needs ribbon)
Buy sizes that match the printer: shop stock · size chart.
2. Design at real dimensions
Set 4×6, 2×1, etc. in software — not letter. Free designer: mylabelmaker.
3. Match DPI
203 DPI is most common; 300 for dense barcodes. DPI guide.

5. Print
Browser Print → Zebra. Calibrate if labels skip: calibrate.
